Hidden Spiral Arms Unveiled

At the top of this new image, a nearby galaxy reveals its hidden youthful nature. Radiating out of a pink core, the blue spiral arms – which are lit by the fires of hot, young stars – were discovered in ultraviolet light by NASA’s Galaxy Evolution Explorer.

The galaxy NGC 4625, which lies 31 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici, always seemed like just a plain old galaxy made up of 10 billion-year-old stars. The unexpected spiral arms, which extend four times further than the core, are inhabited primarily by one billion-year-old stars.

This remarkable mix of young and old may be a picture of what our Milky Way looked like in its past.

“We do not fully understand how stars were created in our galaxy,” said Barry Madore of the Carnegie Observatories, co-author of a paper in the July issue of Astrophysical Journal Letters. “This nearby galaxy represents one of our possible histories, in which stars developed first in the galaxy core and then later in the arms.”

The neighboring galaxy in this image is NGC 4618. Why this companion does not have arms is a mystery, but astronomers suspect that the arms in NGC 4625 may have been triggered by interactions with NGC 4618.

There’s Calm in Your Eye

The eye of Category Four Hurricane Dean is seen in close-up from space, looking here more like a pile of dirty snow than a monstrous, raging storm.

Crewmembers on the Space Shuttle Endeavour captured this image of Hurricane Dean in the Caribbean, around Noon CDT on August 18, 2007.

At the time the shuttle and International Space Station passed overhead, the Category Four storm was moving in a westerly direction at 17 mph nearing the island of Jamaica possessing sustained winds of 150 mph.

At the time of this writing, Monday morning, August 20, Dean has passed Jamaica, and is headed for Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. All of Belize is under a hurricane warning.

NASA decided to bring the shuttle Endeavour down from Space on Tuesday, one day earlier than planned, to avoid any effects of Dean.

Anatomy of a Dream

The following can be found in a book called Dreams.
An average dream appears to have a dramatic structure that can be examined and identified:

Phase I

Phase 2

Phase 3

At the very beginning of a dream there is a statement of place and the protagonist is identified. Rarely is there a statement of time. This is the Phase of Exposition where there is an initial scene of action, all of the people involved are present, and the initial situation, or problem, of the dream is revealed.

In this part of the dream tension starts to build up. The situation in the dream becomes more complicated. The plot of the dream develops and there is much uncertainty as to the outcome of the situation.

Often the situation in the dream will suddenly change, or something decisive will happen. This phase of the dream is its culmination or peripeteia.

Phase 4
This phase is not always present in dreams. It is the solution to the dream dilemma, the result, or the lysis of the dream. This final outcome of the dream is a message from the unconscious mind to the conscious. If the dreamer does not get the message, or if the conscious mind does not get involved with the dream content, the unconscious mind will keep sending up same materials until they are noticed. Dreams are repetitive in their content and message. We are given many opportunities to pay attention and to get involved on the conscious level with the materials coming up from our unconscious.
